Authorities have stated that approximately 50 people were injured in a stampede that occurred after the boxing match between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Marcos Maidana on Saturday night, May 3 2014. According to officials, the stampede began shortly after the fight at MGM Grand Garden Arena. 50 fans were injured and 24 were taken to the hospital after fans rushed into the MGM’s Garden Walk promenade.
Clark County Firefighters reported to the scene after receiving an emergency call that gunshots had been fired. It was later discovered that a wall or partition near a Starbucks had collapsed, causing a loud bang similar to a gunshot. In the chaos, hundreds of fans rushed from the arena. Eyewitnesses also reported several fights that broke out amid the stampede.
More than 20 ambulances arrived at the hotel, as well as several fire engines from the Clark County Fire Department. A medical triage was set up to treat injured fans. Some victims were transported to the hospital for various injuries, including foot and ankle injuries, back injuries, lacerations, and injuries resulting from being stepped on. Two security guards were also hurt.
Although no serious injuries occurred, the incident has prompted questions regarding security and safety protocol at the event. At large sporting events and other venues, premises owners are expected to keep visitors and guests safe from preventable harm. When they fail to keep guests safe, they may be held liable for damages victims suffer.
